For our active patients who participate in sport activities, we offer custom made mouthguards. Custom fitting allows your mouth to be accurately assessed to provide the best fit, size, coverage and thickness. Whether you are an adult or child taking part in contact sports, custom made mouthguards are strongly advised to prevent injuries. The process includes two very quick and simple visits where you will initially take impressions (moulds of your teeth) and select your favourite colour (must be selected from the provided chart) and approximately 1 week later return to pick up the mouthguards at reception or for a try in. Mouthguards can be adjusted if necessary however, although they are comfortable and allow you to talk, please keep in mind that the fitting should be relatively tight as they have maximum resistance against being dislodged.
A mouthguard helps absorb the shock experienced by a blow to the face, which might otherwise result in an injury to the mouth or jaw. A heavy collision can result in chipped or broken teeth, internal damage to a tooth, tooth loss, injuries to the soft tissue of the mouth, and, in severe cases, concussion or a broken jaw. The best way to keep your mouthguard clean is to rinse under cold water after each use. They should be dried and stored in a plastic container, away from direct sunlight and higher temperatures to prevent distortion.
